Why It's Important That Every Televised Grammy Winner Was a Woman

13.9 PERCENT.

That’s the percentage of women between 2013-2023 nominated for Grammy Awards. Things changed this year as 2024 Grammy nominees and winners were dominated by women.

Just days earlier, the internet was up in arms over the snub Barbie (2023) had at the Oscars. Despite being apart of the top movie of 2023, Margot Robbie did not receive a nomination for Best Actress. Alongside Robbie, Greta Gerwig was also not nominated for Best Director. Ryan Gosling, who played Ken in the film, received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor, one of main categories of the Oscars. It was as if the message of the movie wasn’t even brought into play when it came to the nominations.

Fast forward to February 4th, 2024 when our screens were graced by the 66th Annual Grammy Awards.

TOP NOMINEES

SZA was the most nominated artist of the night, up for a whopping 9 awards. Phoebe Bridgers of boygenius and Victoria Monét followed closely behind with 7 nominations. Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish all were up for 6 awards that night as well.

Trevor Noah, the host of the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, started off the night by saying “There’s a band that has already won today called boygenius, it’s three women. That’s how good a year it is for women." Already, the first few minutes of the show praised women more than the Oscars did the entire night. [love this]

TYLA’S FIRST EVER WIN

South African singer, Tyla, won her first award at the 66th Annual Grammy's. Her nomination made history as she was the first winner of the Best African Music Performance Award. Thanks to her incredible voice and unique sound, Tyla rose to prominence via her viral song, Water, which won her this award.

YOU CAN’T STOP SWIFT

Hot off the second leg of her monumental Eras Tour, Taylor Swift made time to attend the Grammy’s this year. Swift broke a record that night by becoming the only artist to ever achieve winning Album of The Year 4 times. After Swift won a separate award (Best Pop Vocals), she announced on stage her newest album and the release date. The announcement led Swift to another personal record of fastest Instagram post to reach 10 million likes.

THE MAIN TAKEAWAY

16.9 million people tuned into the 66th Annual Grammy’s. 16.9 million people saw women take over the stage as winners that night. Women from all different backgrounds, ethnicities and sexualities were represented during this show.
